No *personal* pronouns, I should have written.
Anyhow, to my mind the line reflects both how and what I teach in class.
But then, too, there’s the ambiguity of the line: Is it a rhetorical question (perhaps not!)? Is it even a question at all, or rather is it an exclamation bemoaning the difficulty of achieving tenderness?
